ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER

Ayano is a NYC photographer, originally from Japan, and the owner of Ayano Hisa Photography, Inc. Her photography is closely related to music. As soon as she arrived in USA from her home country, Japan, she traveled around US to explore the roots of American music with a camera in her hand. Since then, she has worked for organizations including Newport Jazz Festival, Savannah Music Festival and Jazz at Lincoln Center, New York Philharmonic, among many others. She often photographs events, such as special events with music performances, galas, music and dance concerts, corporate events and weddings.

One of her past personal projects was documenting the aftermath of the March 2011 tragedy in Japan, a massive earthquake and tsunami which also devastated a large portion of her mother’s hometown, Ishinomaki City (“Schools in Tohoku“). This series was exhibited as a solo show in March 2016 in Tokyo, Japan, as part of the 5th anniversary charity event. (This photo exhibition was made possible by the generous support by Nikon and Protech.) She was awarded an Artist Fellowship from New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) and the Architectural Photographer of the Year 2012 from the International Photography Awards (IPA) for this project.

She has received a BFA in Professional Photographic Illustration from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 2006 and a MFA in Photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2009.
